“The CMT Music Awards” will have its global premiere exclusively on CBS in 2022. This year, the event was simulcast across ViacomCBS cousins, including its long-time home, CMT, and saw a more than 10% increase in total viewers. CMT isn’t out of the picture – the network will kick off the company’s first ever Country Music Week by hosting week-long special programming and events capped by director’s cut airings of the “CMT Music Awards later on CMT and various ViacomCBS platforms.

The Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust complaint against Facebook was dismissed by a federal judge, who said the government’s case – aimed at breaking up the tech giant - was “legally insufficient,” and did not prove its assertion that Facebook held a monopoly. The judge did not, however, dismiss the case as a whole, saying the agency could file and amended complaint. Thumbs up, said investors - Facebook’s stock rose 4.2% on the news, pushing the company’s market cap above $1 trillion for the first time.

The Advertising Research Foundation announced a study designed to produce a common set of unbiased measures for defining digital device and account sharing and usage. “The Study of Account and Device Sharing” will assess personal and household sharing and usage of devices and digital media and ecommerce accounts. Research will include:
· A comprehensive household device graph, with device ownership, sharing among household members and modes of usage
· Television ownership by brand, home location, service mode, and smart capability
· TV viewing by respondent by device in the past seven days
· Viewing of live and streaming services by respondent by device, P7D and yesterday, including co-viewing
· Time-shifted viewing of live TV
· Account ownership and sharing of streaming video and audio services
“Providers of digital services and research lack a consistent, reliable and efficient way to parse the digital world at the user level,” said Paul Donato, Chief Research Officer at the ARF. “The initiative will provide a critical and much-needed, unbiased standard to the industry for the measurement of digital device and account sharing.” Sponsors of the study include 605, Experian, Innovid, Neustar, The NPD Group, Verizon and VideoAmp.

AMC Networks announced they will adopt Unified ID 2.0, an upgraded alternative to third-party cookies representing a neutral, independent ID solution that is interoperable and open-source with other ID solutions. Prebid.org has agreed to serve as an operator for the ID later this year. “As we continue our viewers first strategy, advertisers look to move their reach into streaming and it is our goal to make 100% of our digital inventory available to buy programmatically, joining the Unified ID 2.0 initiative made perfect sense,” said Evan Adlman, SVP of Advanced Advertising and Digital Partnership for AMC Networks.

Newsmax has hired former Fox News host Eric Bolling, who will introduce a new show on the cable news net in July. Bolling’s most recent TV job was hosting “America This Week with Eric Bolling,” a Sunday politics program that aired across Sinclair stations and ended earlier this year.

Nominations are out for the children’s, animation lifestyle Daytime Emmys. Winners will be honored in live-stream events on Saturday and Sunday, July 17-18.

The NATPE annual conference in Budapest, scheduled for August 30-September 2, has been canceled, amid the rise of the Delta Variant and travel restrictions. “As the pandemic evolves and our focus shifts towards getting back together in-person, we have also decided to forgo a virtual edition of the event,” said a statement from NATPE. “We look forward to seeing everyone together and face-to-face at NATPE Streaming Plus in Los Angeles on September 14th and NATPE Miami in January 2022.”

Harry Connick Jr. will play Daddy Warbucks in NBC’s “Annie Live!”, opposite Taraji P. Henson as Miss Hannigan. The musical special airs Thursday, December 2.

HBO Max renewed “Made for Love” for a second season. “’Made for Love’ is funny, dark, and entirely unique,” said Suzanna Makkos, EVP, Original Comedy and Adult Animation, HBO Max. “We are thrilled to be reuniting with this dream team of talented producers, incredible cast, and CGI dolphins to tell the next chapter of this exciting story.”

HBO Max also greenlit Swedish comedy “Lust,” produced by Miso Film. The eight-parter focuses on four middle-aged women in a sexually frustrating world.

“Growing Belushi” scored a season two order from Discovery. The reality series follows actor Jim Belushi and his cannabis business in Oregon.

Peacock’s “The Amber Ruffin Show,” launched during the pandemic, will have a live (fully-vaccinated) audience for the first time, starting August 13. Before she faces the crowd at NYC’s 30 Rock, Ruffin – a former gymnastics coach – will cover the Olympics in Tokyo.

Sam Esmail (“Mr. Robot”) is teaming with Julius Onah (“Luce”) to develop a series telling the story of an America that was founded as a monarchy. “The American Throne” will be written and directed by Onah.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Ready to roll-out: Magnolia Network unveiled its launch slate and summer programming schedule. Among the 13 premieres set for Thursday, July 15 alone are, “Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines,” “Family Dinner,” hosted by Andrew Zimmern and “First Time Fixer.”

Apple+ drama “Foundation” debuts Friday, September 24 with three episodes, followed by one new episode weekly. The show is the first screen adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s novel series.

“Brat Loves Judy” joins WE tv’s Thursday lineup of hip hop programming on August 5 at 9p. The docuseries follows “Growin Up Hip Hop” star Da Brat and her girlfriend Jessica “Judy” Dupart.

A new season of “Ghost Adventures” starts streaming Thursday, July 22, exclusively on discovery+. The paranormal series debuted on Travel Channel in 2008, before moving to its streaming home this year.

Historian Bil Lepp travels across the country to determine whether legends like Billy the Kid and Davy Crockett are fact or fiction in History’s “Man vs. History,” premiering Tuesday, July 20 at 10p.

Season four of “Gzero World with Ian Bremmer” kicks off Friday, July 9 on public television stations. The new run starts with an interview with organizational psychologist Adam Grant, who talks about how life has been changed by the coronavirus.

COMING UP

PBS will air three new “In Their Own Words” specials this summer, combining interviews with archival footage. A look at Pope Francis is first, in a show premiering Tuesday, July 20.

Familiar Hallmark faces return in new Signature Mysteries during the month of August on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. First up: “Mystery 101: Deadly History,” starring Jill Wagner, Kristoffer Polaha and Robin Thomas, airing Sunday, August 1 at 9p.

Fox Business Network will present a special edition of post-market program “Kudlow” in honor of Independence Day on Wednesday, June 30 at 4p. The live, one-hour special, “Kudlow: America the Great,” will bring together economic and political experts to discuss the American Dream and how viewers can continue the pursuit of prosperity.

STREAMING

The gross cash amount spent producing and licensing new entertainment content (excluding sports) for streaming platforms rose by 16.4% in 2020 to reach $220.2 billion, according to Purely Streamonomics. The biggest single spender on content remains The Walt Disney Company, with a grossed-up total of $28.6 billion for 2020 – more than spend across the whole of Asia ($27.7 billion) last year.

Just in time for the Olympics, YouTube TV has launched a new 4K streaming bundle with options including 5.1 Dolby Audio in addition to high resolution streaming. The package includes the ability to download programming to play later on a phone or tablet, and unlimited streams on home WiFi.

NBC News launched a “Today” podcast on Monday. Each show will be broken up by hour, available after the 60-minute TV segment is over.

STARZ’s programming delivers the highest hit rate with the most in-demand series on average both domestically and internationally, according to an analysis from Parrot Analytics. The study found that STARZ original series attracted over five times the US audience demand of an average TV series over the 12 months ending June 19. On a global scale, the average STARZ original is 12.6% ahead of the next-best performing platform’s average original series.

BBC Select has added new documentaries as part of a deal with TVF International. Among the offerings are “Brilliant Bronte Sisters,” and “The Man Who Shot Tutankhamun.”

GOING GLOBAL

Asian animation studio Cosmos-Maya announced that NewQuest Capital Partners has acquired a majority interest in the company from Emerald Media, an investment platform backed by KKR.

AMC Networks International and M7 Group, owned by Canal+, announced a multi-year, multi-territory extension to their strategic partnership in Central and Eastern Europe. The agreement covers the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania, and secures enhanced distribution for the AMCNI pay-TV channel portfolio in each country including linear channels and enriched video-on-demand content.

Gusto TV is expanding its linear channel into France with rlaxx TV. Currently, Gusto TV is available on rlaxx TV in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, with rollouts to Spain and Portugal expected this summer.

Two Entertainment One series, “Peppa Pig” and “PJ Masks,” will be broadcast on TV Tokyo in Japan.
