COVER Focus: ELECTRIC POWER

ELECTRIC POWER Heads to Denver
The 22nd annual ELECTRIC POWER Conference and Exhibition will convene in Denver, Colorado, April 14–17, 2020. ELECTRIC POWER is the premier event supporting power generation in North America and around the world. The event provides real-world, actionable content and case studies to help better prepare power generators for what lies ahead. This article will highlight some of the sessions that will make this year’s event extraordinary.

FEATURES

Natural Gas Feels the Heat; Is a Flameout Near?
A global collapse in natural gas prices is roiling the industry, delaying projects and causing gas producers to write down the value of assets. Liquefied natural gas (LNG), a market that promised to prop up prices by providing an outlet for the glut of production in the U.S. and elsewhere, has been impacted by lack of demand, in part due to the coronavirus in China. And gas, once seen as the bridge fuel from thermal generation to renewables, has increasingly been targeted by those concerned about emissions from the power sector.

A New Frontier for Nuclear Fuels
Part 1 of this two-part series was published in March and focused on exciting nuclear fuel developments—including accident tolerant fuels—that could impact the existing fleet. In Part 2, POWER surveys global nuclear fuel developments that support the emerging fleet of advanced designs, including small modular reactors and micro-reactors.

The Stunning Impact of Electrification on the Power Sector
Electrification of the end use of energy offers lucrative opportunities and challenges, and it could transform utilities and other industries where power is a key input, with benefits for customers, society, and the environment. This article will examine hurdles that are holding up progress, as well as perspectives on how soon and how broadly electrification could play out.

Gas-to-Liquid: Creating New Opportunities from Natural Gas
Gas-to-liquid (GTL) is the integrated process of the manufacture of synthesis gas (syngas) from natural gas, the subsequent conversion of the syngas into hydrocarbons via the Fischer-Tropsch reaction, followed by liquid processing that typically consists of hydroprocessing reactors and distillation columns to generate the final products with the targeted properties. This article will explain why that’s important for power generators.

Using Wireless Monitoring to Improve Operations
This case study will explain how a major Texas-based utility is using data from its historian to evaluate asset condition and better understand what is adversely impacting equipment life. Ideally, the data is used to tweak the process to prevent future damage.

Finding the Right Instrumentation Fittings for an Application
This article will explain the ins and outs of instrumentation fittings, including single- and double-ferrule designs. It describes the pros and cons of each, and the applications where one may be preferred over the other. Some of the elements considered are safety, corrosion, lubrication requirements, and how traceable the heat codes are for both.

Hydropower: Meeting Growing Needs with Improved Reliability and Efficiency
Hydropower delivers a range of benefits to society and the environment. However, there are two major challenges that face hydroelectric power plant operators—efficient use of water and high availability. To meet these requirements there is a transformation taking place within hydroelectric plant operations enabling them to become safer, smarter, and more sustainable, supporting their important and growing position as an uninterrupted renewable energy source.

Power Plant Cycles with Multiple Direct Contact Heaters
The regenerative feedwater cycle of modern fossil and nuclear power plants normally includes four or five low-pressure, closed (tube surface-type) feedwater heaters (CFWHs). However, maximum efficiency can be obtained when CFWHs in the power plant cycle are replaced by direct contact heaters. Other benefits of direct contact heaters will also be explained in this article.

Linemen Training Tips, Safety Best Practices, and Apparel Selection
Whether you’re interested in improving your performance on the line, expanding the safety knowledge of your team, or looking to modify your workwear for greater comfort and functionality, this article will provide essential steps to optimize your jobsite performance.

Conveyor Energy Storage—A Battery and Pumped Hydro Alternative
A new conveyor-based system offers an alternative energy storage technology. The heart of the system is a reversible conveyor belt that converts between electrical energy and gravitational potential energy by transporting bulk granular materials between two stockpiles at different elevations.

Understanding Diesel Fuel Storage Requirements
Diesel fuel storage requirements are based on factors such as whether the liquid fuel is “combustible” or “flammable” as assessed by the fuel flash point. In addition to explaining how fuel blending affects storage criteria, this article also touches on bulk storage tank design standards, and sizing and installation best practices.
