Advertising Readership Survey: Signet AdStudy®
As the initial study and starting point, this acts at the benchmark and establishes a baseline. It determines company awareness, purchase consideration and brand perception.
How it Works
This study is conducted electronically. 2 weeks after readers receive their issue, a sample of subscribers receive a personalized e-mail from POWER inviting them to participate in the survey and giving them the link address. The respondents click on to the study website and can see the ads being measured in front of them.

COVER FOCUS: POWER Awards
Plant of the Year: T-Point 2
Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) T-Point 2 facility operates what the company has called the world's "most efficient heavy-duty gas turbine." Connected to the actual grid, it is the only plant of its type in the world to function as both a technology demonstrator, and an electric power producer and supplier. The facility is expected to help advance MHPS's technology and enable more robust validation of advanced-class gas turbines such as the 1,650C-class JAC model and 1,700C-class ultra-high-temperature models.
Reinvention Award: AES Southland Project
AES replaced its Alamitos Energy Center and Huntington Beach Energy Project, which have provided electricity to local residents for nearly fifty years, with new, more modern natural-gas facilities. Kiewit designed and built two high-efficiency, 600-MW combined cycle gas plants in a 2x1 configuration. Each facility features two GE 7FA.05 gas turbines, machines that have fast-start and rapid-response capabilities to help supplement California's intermittent renewable energy resources.
Water Award: Sur Desalination Plant
Desalination is a key solution in overcoming resource scarcity in the Middle East. The Sur plant, located in east Oman, provides more than 130,000 cubic meters of drinking water per day to about 600,000 people across the Sharqyiah region. The plant recently became home to Veolia's "barrel" technology—a cylinder composed of membranes that optimize water filtering performance and the operating costs of reverse osmosis processes. The innovation reduces the average cost of a desalination plant by 3% to 5%, saves 1.5% of energy, and lessens the ground footprint by 25% compared to a desalination system housed in a building.
Smart Grid Award: Alabama Power's Smart Neighborhood
Southern Company subsidiary Alabama Power has an innovative Smart Neighborhood initiative that provides customers with state-of-the-art home construction, distributed energy resources—including solar and battery energy storage—and smart home appliances and technologies. One of the company's Smart Neighborhoods, which includes 62 single-family homes outside of Birmingham, Alabama, integrates a 300-kW/852.32-kWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system, designed and built by PowerSecure; a 330-kW ground-mount solar system; and a 400-kW standby/360-kW prime natural gas-fired generator.
Commercial & Industrial Generation Award: Delta Electronics Americas Ltd. Headquarters
Delta's headquarters in Fremont, California—a 178,000-square-foot LEED Platinum building—incorporates many of the company's own energy-efficient solutions to achieve an unsurpassed level of sustainability. The innovations include a PV system with high-efficiency solar inverters, a ground-source heat pump, bi-directional radiant heating and cooling system, active chilled beams, variable-frequency drives, 19 electric vehicle chargers, and a 140,000-gallon rainwater harvesting tank to water landscape.
Distributed Energy Award: Puerto Rico Solar Schools Project
After Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico residents were left without electricity, water, and refuge during the most difficult time of their lives. The Solar Schools project installed 110 renewable energy microgrid systems at schools designated as emergency shelters for local communities across the island to prevent a similar tragedy from happening again. These systems—anchored by Blue Planet Energy's energy storage system connected to solar generation—increase flexibility and enhance energy resilience.

The State of Fusion Energy
Many people have joked that "fusion is 30 years away and always will be," but that's not really true anymore. There are several optimistic developments. For example, there is a large fusion experiment called ITER under construction in France that is due to start operations in 2025; the first prototype fusion power plant is under development in China with first operations expected in the early 2030s; the U.S. fusion community is about to release a project plan for a pilot-scale plant in the U.S., also slated for the 2030s; and there are now about half a dozen privately funded startup companies exploring alternative approaches to fusion that could potentially accelerate the timeline.
Assembling a Skilled Construction Workforce in 2020 and Beyond
The U.S. labor force—like every area of life—has been greatly affected by COVID-19. It's hard to predict the ways in which labor supply and demand in the construction industry may ultimately change as a result of the virus. No matter how the future unfolds, construction firms and owners need to work together to implement best practices for attracting the best talent to their team.
Utilizing 3D Reality Capture Technology in the Power Industry
The power industry has steadily been increasing the use of 3D reality capture technology, but it is still behind other industries in adopting the service. This article focuses on successful applications and shows how others can employ the technology to achieve similar goals. Adoption of this useful and readily available technology could make life easier and minimize errors compared to more traditional methods.
